BACKGROUND

World Spice Merchants is a spice shop in downtown Seattle just outside of historic Pike Place Market. Since 1996 they’ve specialized in spices and teas from around the world, focusing on flavor and freshness. Branching out to new markets would be a great way to highlight World Spice Merchants' excellent selection of teas.

SOLUTION

World Spice Merchants current tone and branding speaks to the quality of their tea and spices. It also highlights the hard work done to travel the world to procure those teas and spices from their original sources. Focusing on that, I wanted to showcase the ideas of travel and quality control while updating and modernizing the type and illustration.

Drawing inspiration from coffee and liquor labels, I added a brew date section where a date can be hand written. This adds artisan flair and can speak to the freshness of the product. I wanted the layout of product info to be reminiscent of a plane or train ticket to emphasize the idea of travel. Additionally to that theme I added illustrations to the product descriptions of the environments the tea blends would be coming from.

PROCESS

TIME FRAME: 4 WEEKS

I began with the design of a new logo. Since “World Spice Tea” would be an off shoot of “World Spice Merchants” I wanted to update and modernize the logo they currently had. It needed to hold it’s own with a plethora of other similar beverages currently in the market. I kept the type simple and clean with a condensed font. This allowed me to keep the name “World Spice” bold but not take up too much space. World is a harder word to kern so the condensed font allowed for more leeway in that regard.

Once the logo was established I set out on the layout of the label. I wanted the info on the bottle to be up front and the tone to feel honest. Spices and tea aren’t the most beautiful to photograph so I kept to color blocking and a simple illustration style.
