BACKGROUND

Romance Club grew out of a love for art. Being an artist and creating is inherently romantic. It’s passionate, obsessive, foolish, and loving all in one. I wanted Romance Club the magazine to be a celebration of that.

The word romance is steeped in association with history and passion. I wanted to contrast that with the idea of a club. The idea of a club house or your local book club anywhere someone would go to join and be apart of an accepting community.

So Romance Club is the space where we can demystify art and the act of creating. Join the club and we can show you how to infuse your life with all that passion, obsession, foolishness, and most of all, love.

GOALS

I set out to gather or create a substantial amount of written content based on the theme of inspiration, the creation of art, and how to add those ideas to your lifestyle.  Secondarily I wanted to create, collect, or art direct visual assets to support the written content, along with laying it all out in a coherent and well designed manner.

PROCESS

A lot of romance club was born from summer hangouts, talking about strange and unique things, and how to make art easier for everyone to enjoy. I spent the summer brainstorming and collecting articles and reaching out to friends who might want to contribute. After solidifying a few ideas I worked on art directing a few photoshoots and collecting other relevant images.

Starting in on branding I worked out a moodboard, personas, and a stye tile, which helped to focus my designs when I started laying out the articles. As I worked through laying out each article I struggled deciding on an over all brand and visual style that worked across the whole magazine.  I wanted to let each article influence it's layout. I decided to lean into that, building the magazine like a mixtape, each article unique but working together with just subtle hints of repeating colors and type.
